G. Mennella et al., Seed storage protein characterization of Solanum species and of cultivars and androgenetic lines of S-melongena L. by SDS-PAGE and AE-HPLC, SEED SCI T, 27(1), 1999, pp. 23-35
6 Solanum species, 20 S. melongena L. cultivars and 21 double-haploid andro
genetic lines were characterized by seed storage protein analysis. Anionic
exchange High Performance Liquid Chromatography (AE-HPLC) elution profiles
and sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) b
anding patterns from either water- or basic-soluble proteins demonstrated d
egrees of polymorphism. Solanum species and S.,melongena cultivars were cle
arly identified by both methods, although with a different level of resolut
ion. The androgenetic lines were divided into six groups by SDS-PAGE analys
is whereas AE-HPLC allowed the distinction between lines belonging to the s
ame group. A combination of both methods enabled the biochemical characteri
zation of the tested samples. Different growth and environmental conditions
did not influence the composition of Solanum alkali-soluble seed protein e
xtracts.
