Abstract
Preceding stereotypical left-right asymmetric morphogenesis, asymmetric gen e expression patterns of nodal and pitx2 are very similar in major groups o f vertebrates. I propose that these conserved expression patterns are indic ative of 'left-right phylotypic stages' of development. It is not known whe ther these patterns are initiated by conserved or divergent developmental m echanisms.
