The accuracy of gravimetric fractionation as a means of obtaining size frac
tions from marine sediments has been explored. Analysis of the particle siz
e distribution and sediment properties of fractions obtained using this met
hod was undertaken. This has highlighted the extent to which experimental a
rtefacts rather than variations in sediment characteristics may adversely a
ffect the efficiency of the fractionation process. Copyright (C) 1999 John
