In a nongeometrical interpretation of gravity, the metric g(mu nu)(x) = eta
(mu nu) + Phi(mu nu)(x) is interpreted as an effective metric, whereas Phi(
mu nu)(x) is interpreted as a fundamental gravitational field, propagated i
n spacetime which is actually flat. Some advantages and disadvantages of su
ch an interpretation are discussed. The main advantage is a natural resolut
ion of the flatness problem.
