We present a case of gastric pneumatosis associated with splenoportal venou
s gas caused by a giant penetrating gastric ulcer. On sonography, the gastr
ic pneumatosis appeared as a circular hyperechoic band with distal reverber
ations due to gas collection in the gastric wall; we termed this appearance
the "gastric corona sign." Awareness of this sonographic sign may aid in t
he early diagnosis of gastric pneumatosis. (C) 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
