Jt. Moskowitz et al., THE ASSOCIATION BETWEEN JOHNSON,MAGIC HIV SEROSTATUS DISCLOSURE AND CONDOM USE IN AT-RISK RESPONDENTS, The Journal of sex research, 34(2), 1997, pp. 154-160
Two waves of data from the National AIDS Behavioral Surveys, one colle
cted prior to Magic Johnson's disclosure that he was HIV positive and
one collected after; were used to address whether the disclosure was r
elated to increases in condom use in a representative sample of respon
dents with a risk factor for HIV. Results indicated that Blacks, Hispa
nics, those with fewer than 12 years of education, and unmarried respo
ndents were more likely to report being influenced by Magic Johnson's
announcement, In addition, even when sociodemographic variables relate
d to change in condom use were controlled those respondents who report
ed being influenced by Magic Johnson's announcement were more likely t
o increase their condom use.
