Abstract
Ribozymes are a class of ribonucleic acid (RNA) molecules that possess enzy matic properties. Upon binding to complementary nucleic acid strands, catal ytic degradation occurs via a cleavage reaction. In effect, inactivation of susceptible substrate RNA molecules take place at a catalytic rate and wit h a high degree of substrate specificity. This review deals with the struct ure, design and potential applications of ribozymes in medicine. Med Sci Re s 27:507-512 (C) 1999 Lippincott Williams & Wilkins.
