Mouse matrix telomere-binding protein (mMTBP) was immunochemically stained
with antibodies against frog membrane telomere-binding protein (MTBP). In i
nterphase nuclei, signals from mMTBP coincided with those of FISH with a te
lomere-specific probe. In metaphase cells, weak signals were associated wit
h chromosomes, and more intense ones were beyond them. The latter proved to
coincide with lamin B conglomerates; i.e., they were most probably associa
ted with membrane vesicles, the remnants of the disintegrated nuclear envel
ope. Signals from mMTBP were close to the nuclear envelope and coincided wi
th some lamin B signals in mouse liver interphase nuclei. Location of known
telomere-binding proteins and the possible telomere attachment to the nucl
ear envelope in normal cells are discussed.
