A hybrid sampling and wavetable synthesis method is introduced for mat
ching acoustic instruments using genetic algorithm optimization. The m
ethod uses sampling for the critical attack portion of the tone and wa
vetable synthesis to match the more gradually changing sustain and dec
ay. To perform a smooth transition between them, a hybrid sampling-wav
etable crossfade is used. Various tones from the piano, harp, glockens
piel, and temple block were matched. Listening tests have found the ma
tches indistinguishable from the original tones.
