The isospin dependence of the real part of the single-particle potential of
a Sigma hyperon in nuclear matter, (V) over cap(Sigma) is investigated. Th
e isospin-dependent part V-1 of (V) over cap(Sigma) is expressed in terms o
f an effective Sigma N interaction in nuclear matter, which depends on prot
on and neutron densities. With suitable approximations numerical results fo
r V, are obtained for four models of the Nijmegen baryon-baryon interaction
. A comparison with recent (K-, pi(+/-)) experiments favors model F as a re
alistic representation of the Sigma N interaction. [S0556-2813(99)03008-3].
