Miscible binary blends of poly(ethylene oxide) and an amorphous aromatic polyamide (Aramide 34I): crystallization, melting behavior and semi-crystalline morphology
G. Dreezen et al., Miscible binary blends of poly(ethylene oxide) and an amorphous aromatic polyamide (Aramide 34I): crystallization, melting behavior and semi-crystalline morphology, POLYMER, 40(23), 1999, pp. 6451-6463
The crystallizable component poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) displays liquid-liq
uid phase separation in blends with the rigid amorphous aromatic polyamide,
Aramide 34I. The crystallization, melting behavior and the semi-crystallin
e morphology after crystallization from the miscible state, are investigate
d. It is found that the amorphous component, Aramide 34I, has a pronounced
effect on the crystallization behavior of PEO; PEO can only be crystallized
up to 35 wt.% of Aramide 34I. A complex melting behavior of PEO with secon
dary crystallization and recrystallization, in which the amorphous componen
t segregates interlamellarly during crystallization, is described. A lamell
ar insertion model is proposed for the location of the secondary lamellae.
