A novel poly(Schiff-base sulfide) polymer was synthesized by nude ophilic d
isplacement polymerization of N,N'-bis(p-chlorobenzylidine)4,4'-diaminodiph
enyl ether with sodium sulfide in anhydrous condition. The resulting polyme
r was soluble in some aprotic solvents having inherent viscosity of 0.18 dL
/g in dimethylacetamide at 30 degrees C. The monomer and the polymer were c
haracterized by elemental analysis, infrared, and H-1 NMR (nuclear magnetic
resonance) spectroscopy. The thermal characteristics of the polymer were a
lso studied by thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorim
etry. The temperature of 10% weight loss, glass transition temperature (T-g
), and crystalline melting point (T-m) of the polymer were found to be 420,
91.89, and 385.75 degrees C respectively.
