Structure formation during the sintering of ZrN-Cr and HfN-Cr composites in
argon was studied Due to insufficient wetting of the the solid nitride fra
meworks by the liquid phase, and the evolution of nitrogen from ZrN and HfN
, the composites retained high porosity (more than 15%). Sintering was acco
mpanied by a rapid reaction of chromium with evolved nitrogen, and also wit
h Zr and Hf to form the intermetallics ZrCr2 and HfCr2.
