The distribution of functional groups in a monomeric unit of carboxymethyl
dextran was studied by H-1 NMR. The distribution of carboxymethyl groups be
tween the 2-, 3-, and 4-positions of the glucopyranose unit of dextran was
studied as a function of the total degree of substitution. The activity con
stants were determined for hydroxyls in 2-, 3-, and 4-positions of the unit
in carboxymethylation reaction.
