Kinetics of the sigma-phase formation promoted by an isothermal annealing a
t T = 600 and 700 degrees C was investigated in a polycrystalline alloy of
Fe53.8Cr46.2-0.1 at,%Ti by means of the in situ Fe-57 Mossbauer-effect meas
urements. It is demonstrated that the kinetics can be obtained from the tem
perature dependence of the average isomer shift. Using this new approach, t
he activation energy was evaluated as equal to 109.8 kJ/mol. (C) 1999 Elsev
