Extensive numerical parameter studies have taken place at the Institute for
Electroheat of the University of Hanover to analyse the influences of the
numerous operating and plant-related parameters on the process of induction
heating in a magnetic transverse field. The knowledge gained has served as
a basis to develop initial design criteria for transverse-flux heating sys
tems. Besides the optimisation of the electrical efficiency and of the temp
erature distribution in the strip, parasitic mechanical influences also fin
d consideration for the first time. The thermal deformation of the strip an
d the resulting effects on the temperature field, as well as the generation
of noise, receive special attention.
