As a rule, quality control in an iron and steel mill is governed by three m
ain factors: process management, time management and personnel management.
The primary goal, also in a steel plant, is constancy of all the processes.
In this connection, process management encompasses both the control of the
process itself and the charge materials allocated to that process stage. T
he function of time management consists in the scheduling of events and the
selective control of time intervals. Personnel management ensures a compar
able level of knowledge and high level of qualification for all the personn
el and is characterised by the processes' and procedures' acceptance.
A comprehensive system of quality control implemented in production at HKM
is presented, taking as an example the preparation and allocation of scrap
and hot metal. The traceability of the monitoring and control mechanisms is
highlighted, and attention is drawn to the potentials for a continuous imp
rovement process as a result of these mechanisms.
