Throughout most of medical history, meconium-stained amniotic fluid has bee
n known to be associated with adverse neonatal outcomes. Many therapies hav
e been suggested as having benefit in preventing the meconium aspiration sy
ndrome. The history of meconium-stained amniotic fluid management and the c
urrent status of knowledge concerning the effect of various therapies on th
e prevention of meconium aspiration syndrome are reviewed.
