Model-based controller design gives an insight into dynamic system behavior
, and eliminates excessive reliance on the trial and error adjustments of c
ontroller parameters. A closed-loop speed controller for the inertia phase
of the gearshift in an automatic transmission is designed here, based on a
reduced order linear model of the transmission response extracted from a co
mplex nonlinear dynamic simulation. The controller performance is then veri
fied using the nonlinear simulation. Modification of hardware design to imp
rove system responsiveness is also discussed. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd
