From data recorded in Cuba on the performance of growing and fattening pigs
fed non-conventional diets, analyses on the feasibility of reducing their
protein content are presented. Energy and protein conversions for the growi
ng period were slightly higher than those obtained when the NRC (1988) reco
mmendations are applied, but differences were higher for the fattening stag
e, reaching minimum values of 7 and maximum values of 25%. The factors acco
unting for these differences are analysed and the regression supporting the
hypothesis is presented.
