Two experiments were conducted to study ileal and total tract digestibility
in pigs given levels of 0, 10 and 20% of enriched sugar cane meal (Sacchar
ina) in diets based on maize and soybean meal. In trial 1 or 2, three ileor
rectostomized or six intact pigs weighing 53 or 55 kp were randomly alloted
to three diets according to a single or duplicated 3 x 3 Latin square desi
gn. A significant decrease in ileal and total tract digestibility of nutrie
nts and energy Nas found on increasing the Saccharina in the diet. The cont
ribution of the large intestine to the digestion of diets ranged from 13.4
to 15.5% of the energy that disappeared in the digestive tract. Ileal and t
otal tract digestibility of N (39.9 and 45.4%) and energy (27.5 and 37.1%)
from Saccharina as calculated by difference indicated that the inclusion of
Saccharina in the diet had a depressing effect on ileal digestibility and
on total tract digestibility.
