The design and operation of a novel forced flow reactor for synthesizi
ng nanocrystalline, high surface area (210-250 m(2)/g) TiN powders is
described. A key in tailoring the characteristics of the powder produc
ed in the reactor is the use of a microwave-generated plasma. Sinterin
g results demonstrate the tremendous potential for pressureless sinter
ing of monodisperse, high surface area nitride powders, as well as hig
hlight the need for processing which would address the proclivity for
