Abstract
A chemical analysis has been made of nanocrystals formed through mecha nical deformation. Experimental results demonstrate that when metallic glasses form nanocrystals within deformation bands in Al90Fe5Gd5 meta llic glasses chemical segregation occurs. Previous work by Chen et al showed that there is deformation induced nanocrystal formation in shea r bands in this alloy. This work reveals that the nanocrystals formed have art approximate composition of 95 at% Al, 2 at% Gd and 2 at% Fe. Comparison with nanocrystals formed by isothermal heat treatment in th e same alloy revealed nearly identical chemical profiles. (C) 1997 Act a Metallurgica Inc.
