The structure and thermal stability of electro-deposited nanocrystalli
ne Pd was studied by means of positron lifetime spectroscopy, x-ray di
ffraction, and transmission electron microscopy. In comparision to nan
ocrystalline Pd prepared by gas-phase synthesis or severe plastic defo
rmation, larger free volumes occur and the crystallite growth is retar
ded. The enhanced structural stability is attributed to solute atom dr
ag and to nanovoids which are decorated with light impurities and whic
h may act as pinning centers for the crystallite interfaces. (C) 1997
