Abstract
The epidemiologic and clinical characteristics of 201 hospitalized women wi th acute pyelonephritis in northern Israel were recorded. The mean age was 61 years, with 74% older than 50 years, Young women (less than or equal to 50 years) had more urinary tract infection-related symptoms than did older women and had a shorter duration of fever after hospitalizat:on, By a univa riant analysis, four factors were associated with duration of fever: age, p ositive blood cultures, grade of pyuria, and serum urea levels. However, a multivariant analysis showed that age of greater than or equal to 50 years was the only independent factor which influenced the length of fever, Only three older diabetic women with bacteremia :1.5% died.
