Results of studies of optical and scintillation properties of new heavy sci
ntillating composite materials and a CsI:Br inorganic scintillator are pres
ented. These scintillators are intended to be used for the creation of hete
rogeneous electromagnetic calorimeters with an energy resolution as high as
sigma/E congruent to (4 - 5%)/root E. The possibilities of using low-cost
optical ceramics as active media in heterogeneous electromagnetic calorimet
ers are considered.
