This work presents fretting and surface reactivity studies of gas phas
e sputtered nanocrystalline Pd, Pd90Y10 and Pd60Ag40 films deposited o
n metallic substrates. The thermal stability as well as the surface re
activity of the films to organic vapor were also investigated. The sur
faces of the contact regions were examined using scanning electron mic
roscopy and Secondary Ions Mass Spectroscopy. Surface reactivity was s
tudied using X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy. This study reveals that
nanostructured films have a significant technological potential in th
e improvement of low current electrical connections. (C) 1997 Acta Met
