Intermittency of checkerboard spiral waves and traveling clusterings origin
ating from sudden shrinking of the strange attractor of the 2D CML in the n
eighborhood of the saddle-node bifurcation boundary is found. A power-law p
robability density for lifetimes in the spiral wave (laminar) phase is obse
rved, while in the checkerboard clusterings (bursting) phase the above quan
tity exhibits an exponential decay. This difference can be interpreted thro
ugh the self-organized behavior of the spiral waves, and the passive relaxa
tion of the disordered checkerboard clusterings.
