Combined peripheral nerve and central nervous system demyelination in a patient with chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy

We report the case of a 49-year-old woman suffering combined central and pe ripheral demyelination, with serial magnetic resonance images scans illustr ating the development of central demyelination in a patient with establishe d chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy. This is the sixth pati ent with this rare overlap syndrome reported to date. We review the availab le literature and argue that an inherited predisposition to both diseases i s the most likely explanation for its occurrence.
