Abstract
A two-dimensional antiferromagnetic spin-1 Ising model with positive biquad ratic interaction is investigated by finite-size-scaling based on transfer matrix (TMFSS) calculations. At finite temperatures we obtain a quite rich phase diagram, with several multicritical points. We confirm the existence of the intermediate phase observed in previous work for some values of J/K and D/K. For certain range of interaction parameters, the model is shown to violate the ordinary universality hypothesis. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B. V. All rights reserved.
