Boring tests were conducted on aluminum alloys to investigate the effects o
f cutting fluid on machining performance. Statistically designed experiment
s were used to examine the role of such process variables as tool geometry,
cutting conditions, work material, cutting fluid presence, cutting fluid c
oncentration, and hydraulic oil contamination of cutting fluid. Responses f
or the boring tests were surface texture, forces, and observed built-up edg
e (BUE). The results indicate that the cutting fluid presence, oil concentr
ation, and hydraulic oil contamination do not play a significant role in pr
ocess performance under the conditions tested.
