The crystalline structure of a series of Poly(ester amide)s derived from gl
ycine, hexanediol, and odd-numbered dicarboxylic acids has been studied usi
ng transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. Polymers crystal
lize in an orthorhombic lattice with parameters a = 4.80, b = 22.68 Angstro
m, and c in the 45-55 Angstrom interval, depending on the number of methyle
nes of the chemical repeat unit. The structure of the glutaric derivative c
an be interpreted as a singular packing of six hydrogen-bonded sheets. Amid
e and ester interactions between neighboring layers favor two different she
et arrangements that give rise to the observed superstructure. (C) 1999 Joh
