Abstract
A pair of hybrid mass dampers installed at both edges of the top of a six-stage structure comprising floors and pillars (approx. 3.7 m high, total weight approx. 2.5 t) was tested for its performance in reducin g bendind and torsional vibrations. The performance was compared betwe en the control principles of (a) decomposing sensor signals into bendi ng and torsion (''coupled control'') and (b) separating the sensor sig nals (''individual control''). Both control principles proved to ensur e high damping performance for bending and torsion. Between the two pr inciples, coupled control promises better performance in general, as i ndicated from an example of the test results.
