Abstract
Today studies of flow phenomena in nematic systems normally employ the so-c alled Leslie-Ericksen theory. This theory was formulated in its present for m in the 1960s, and it represents the culmination of theoretical developmen ts that essentially started at the beginning of this century. This article gives an account of the evolution of the theory.
