Abstract
Reformatsky-type addition of esters of a-halogeno carboxylic acids to aldeh ydes and ketones in the presence of Fe(CO)(5) and an activating agent (CBrC l3 or I-2) afforded the corresponding esters of beta-hydroxy acids in good yields. Possible reaction mechanisms are discussed.
