Abstract
The epidermis of uninvolved psoriatic skin is characterised by a slight hyp erproliferation and an increase in inflammatory parameters, whereas no diff erentiation abnormalities are seen. Data with respect to the response of di stant uninvolved psoriatic skin to standardised injury are not uniform. In this study, a recently developed multiparameter flow cytometric assay was u sed to compare the response to tape stripping of uninvolved psoriatic and n ormal skin. With this method, a parameter for proliferation, differentiatio n and inflammation was measured simultaneously. Concerning these parameters , no statistically significant differences were found between uninvolved ps oriatic skin and normal skin. The mechanism that underlies hyperproliferati on in distant uninvolved psoriatic skin does not indicate an intrinsic abno rmality in keratinocytes. Inflammatory signals might play a role in this pr ocess.
