Abstract
Soft X-ray spectroscopy of CdS nanocrystals within their crystalline superl attice allows to relate unambiguously changes of the electronic structure w ith the particle size and shape which is known from single crystal X-ray di ffraction. We find that the valence and conduction band edge shift contribu te to the same extent to the total band gap opening of about 2 eV with resp ect to CdS bulk as the particle size decreases to 10 Angstrom. Taking a fin ite height of the potential walls into account, we can reproduce these resu lts within an effective mass approximation model. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
