This article is a review of the pharmacologic management of the horse with
developmental and acute laminitis. The mechanisms of action for vasodilator
s, anticoagulants, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, steroids, and misc
ellaneous agents, used for prevention and treatment, are presented and disc
ussed in light of the current understanding of laminitis. Potential contrai
ndications, complications, appropriate, and inappropriate drug therapy are
briefly presented.
