This article is an overview of the farrier's goals and approaches to the ho
rse with chronic laminitis. The intent of this article is to provide the th
eoretic and anatomic rationale underlying the specific trimming and shoeing
techniques used in the horse with capsular and phalangeal rotation. It is
not intended to be a step-by-step manual of the same. Included are presenta
tions of the intents of the farrier's evaluation of the affected foot and t
he specific goals being sought in trimming and shoeing. Trimming and shoein
g techniques commonly used are presented along with contraindications and p
otential complications.
