Abstract
We define staircase Z(d) actions. We first prove that staircase Z(2) action
s satisfying a general condition are mixing. Then we describe how to extend
the results to the staircase Z(d) actions. Thus we have constructed explic
itly rank one mixing Z(d) actions which include natural analogues to the we
ll-known staircase transformation.
