Abstract
The present study confirms international studies which have shown that an i ncreased body mass index is associated mainly with higher fat intake and wi th a lower sugar intake per energy unit (1000 kcal) supplied. Many of the d ifferences observed seem to be due to different consumption patterns and to different foods consumed. Prospective cohort studies, furthermore, will be a means of studying the ti me between cause and effect more thoroughly These studies will be the basis far more reliable recommendations of fat und sugar intake.
