Dispersion relation, current and growth rate of the kinetic Alfven wave wit
h general loss-cone distribution function in a low beta inhomogeneous plasm
a in the presence of an inhomogeneous electric field applied perpendicular
to the magnetic field have been obtained by investigating the trajectories
of the charged particles, The whole plasma is considered to consist of reso
nant and non-resonant particles. It is assumed that non-resonant particles
support the oscillatory motion of kinetic Alfven wave while the resonant pa
rticles participate in the energy exchange with the wave. The effects of st
eepness of loss-cone distribution and inhomogeneity of electric field are d
iscussed on the dispersion relation, current and growth rate of the instabi
lity. The results are interpreted for the space plasma parameters appropria
te to the auroral acceleration region of the earth's magnetoplasma.
