This paper describes the results of a study carried out to determine the ro
le of impurities on the mechanical behavior of NiAl. Tensile, compression a
nd toughness tests were carried out on high purity single crystal NiAl of t
he stoichiometric composition. The test results were compared with the resu
lts obtained with the conventional purity NiAl. The high purity NiAl specim
ens did not exhibit any improvement in room temperature ductility and tough
ness. The deformation behavior at room temperature of the high purity singl
e crystals was found to be similar to that of the conventional purity NiAl
single crystals. However, the high purity NiAl single crystals showed an ab
sence of strain aging and much lower yield strength compared to the convent
ional purity NiAl. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
