Hypereutectic cast iron specimens cast using chills that were water-cooled
and liquid-nitrogen-cooled were compared with specimens of the same chemica
l composition which were sand cast without any chill. The solidification be
haviour, number of eutectic cells, grain size and the effects of these on t
he mechanical properties like strength and fracture toughness were recorded
and analysed in this paper. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights rese
