The ninth annual Latin American symposium presented by the American Mosquit
o Control Association (AMCA) was held as part of the 65th Annual Meeting in
St. Louis, MO, in February 1999. The principal objective, as for the previ
ous 8 symposia, was to promote participation in the AMCA by vector control
specialists, public health workers, and academicians from Latin America. Th
is publication includes summaries of 44 presentations that were given orall
y in Spanish or presented as posters by participants from 8 countries in La
tin America. Topics addressed in the symposium included results from chemic
al and biological control programs and studies, studies of insecticide resi
stance, and molecular, ecological, and behavioral studies of vectors of den
gue (Aedes aegypti), malaria (Anopheles albimanus and Anopheles aquasalis),
leishmaniasis (Lutzomyia). and Chagas' disease (Triatoma).
