Abstract
The adsorption of benzonitrile, CO, and NO on vanadium-magnesium catalysts (VMC) of ethylene polymerization was studied by IR diffuse-reflectance spec troscopy. It was shown that carbon oxide and benzonitrile interact with bot h the Lewis acid sites of magnesium chloride and the coordinatively unsatur ated V4+ ions in VMC, and the absorption bands of magnesium chloride overla p with the absorption bands of VMC. The complexes of CO and benzonitrile wi th V5+ ions were not found in the VOCl3/MgCl2 system. The coordinatively un saturated V4+ ions in VMC can be identified using NO as a probe molecule (t he absorption bands at 1776, 1840, and 1920 cm(-1)). NO does not interact w ith magnesium chloride used as a support in this system.
