Abstract
We report room-temperature mid-IR laser operation in a new low-phonon-frequ ency nonhygroscopic host crystal, calcium thiogallate (CaGa2S4). Laser acti on at 4.31-4.38 mu m on the Dy3+ H-6(11/2) --> H-6(13/2) transition occurre d with a maximum slope efficiency of 1.6%. (C) 1999 Optical Society of Amer ica.
