Two infants, 18 months and 4 months of age, who were born with bilater
al VI and VII nerve palsy (Moebius syndrome) experienced central respi
ratory failure requiring persistent ventilation. The computed tomograp
hy scan showed small brainstem tegmental calcifications. These finding
s suggest intrauterine brainstem necrosis including the respiratory ce
nter and poor prognosis for independent respiration. (C) 1997 by Elsev
