The lectotype of Pinus mugo from the Seguier Herbarium, designated here, be
longs to introgressive populations between the eastern and the western subs
pecies, generally named P. mugo subsp, mugo and subsp, uncinata, respective
ly. The name P, mugo subsp. mugo would not therefore represent the eastern
populations of the species, as has been generally accepted, but should be a
dopted for the central, intermediate subspecies, known to date as P. mugo s
ubsp, rotundata. This change, however, would so much disrupt the establishe
d nomenclature of the group that it is advisable to conserve the name P. mu
go with a type that agrees with current usage.
