Abstract
Paleatin B (2), an open chain bis(bibenzyl) constituent of Marchantia palea cea var. diptera methoxylated at one of the ethano bridges was synthesised. The key steps were the alkylation of a 2-aryl-1,3-dithiane (11) with a ben zyl bromide (9) and transformation of a benzyl alcohol (17) to a benzyl met hyl ether by acid catalysed methanolysis.
